Mount Calvary Lutheran Church

April 18, 2021 The Third Sunday of Easter

**INVOCATION   (Matthew 28:19)

 **CONFESSION/ABSOLUTION (1 John 1:8-9)

  Pastor: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

  People:         But, if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(silence for reflection and self examination)

 Pastor:   Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

  People:         Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.  We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  We justly deserve your present and eternal punishment.  For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.  Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways to the glory of your most Holy Name.  Amen.

Pastor:    Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake….

** INTROIT (Psalm 33)

Pastor: The earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.  Alleluia.
People: By the word of the Lord the heavens were made.  Alleluia.

Pastor: Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous!
People: Praise befits the upright.

Pastor: Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
People: on those who hope in his steadfast love,

Pastor: that he may deliver their soul from death
People: and keep them alive in famine.

Pastor: Our soul waits for the Lord;
People: he is our help and our shield.

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever.  Amen.

Pastor: The earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.  Alleluia.
People: By the word of the Lord the heavens were made.  Alleluia.

**KYRIE ELEISON

Pastor: …in peace let us pray to the Lord:

People: Lord, have mercy.

** GLORIA IN EXCELSIS  (to be sung)

 Pastor:                Glory be to God on high

 People:  and on earth peace, good will toward men.  We praise you, we bless you, we worship you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory.  O Lord God, heav’nly King, God the Father Almighty.  O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, who takes away the sin of the world, have mercy; who takes away the sin of

the world, receive our prayer, who sits at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy.  For you only are holy; you only are the Lord; you only, O Christ, with the Holy Spirit, are most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

**PRAYER FOR TODAY

O God, through the humiliation of Your Son You raised up the fallen world. Grant to Your faithful people, rescued from the peril of everlasting death, perpetual gladness and eternal joys; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

HYMN – “I am Jesus Little Lamb” LSB#740

1 I am Jesus’ little lamb,
Ever glad at heart I am;
For my Shepherd gently guides me,
Knows my need and well provides me,
Loves me ev’ry day the same,
Even calls me by my name.

2 Day by day, at home, away,
Jesus is my staff and stay.
When I hunger, Jesus feeds me,
Into pleasant pastures leads me;
When I thirst, He bids me go
Where the quiet waters flow.

3 Who so happy as I am,
Even now the Shepherd’s lamb?
And when my short life is ended,
By His angel host attended,
He shall fold me to His breast,
There within His arms to rest.

Old Testament Reading Ezekiel 34:11–16

   11“For thus says the Lord God: Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out. 12As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. 13And I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land. And I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the ravines, and in all the inhabited places of the country. 14I will feed them with good pasture, and on the mountain heights of Israel shall be their grazing land. There they shall lie down in good grazing land, and on rich pasture they shall feed on the mountains of Israel. 15I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I myself will make them lie down, declares the Lord God. 16I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them in justice.”

Epistle                                1 Peter 2:21–25

   21For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Alleluia & Verse                            LSB 205

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Holy Gospel                        John 10:11–16

P   The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the tenth chapter.  C   Glory to You, O Lord.

   11[Jesus said:] “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.”

P   This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C   Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles’ Creed

C   I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

     maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

     who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

     born of the virgin Mary,

     suffered under Pontius Pilate,

     was crucified, died and was buried.

     He descended into hell.

     The third day He rose again from the dead.

     He ascended into heaven

     and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

     From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

     the holy Christian Church,

          the communion of saints,

     the forgiveness of sins,

     the resurrection of the body,

     and the life T everlasting. Amen.

SERMON HYMN LSB 709 The King of Love My Shepherd Is

1   The King of love my shepherd is,
    Whose goodness faileth never;
I nothing lack if I am His
    And He is mine forever.

2   Where streams of living water flow,
    My ransomed soul He leadeth
And, where the verdant pastures grow,
    With food celestial feedeth.

3   Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,
    But yet in love He sought me
And on His shoulder gently laid
    And home rejoicing brought me.

4   In death’s dark vale I fear no ill
    With Thee, dear Lord, beside me,
Thy rod and staff my comfort still,
    Thy cross before to guide me.

5   Thou spreadst a table in my sight;
    Thine unction grace bestoweth;
And, oh, what transport of delight
    From Thy pure chalice floweth!

6   And so through all the length of days
    Thy goodness faileth never;
Good Shepherd, may I sing Thy praise
    Within Thy house forever!

THE MESSAGE
