          Good Friday Service

Pastor: Let us pray.  Almighty God, graciously behold this Your family for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed and delivered into the hands of sinful men to suffer death upon the cross; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever.

All: Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING — Isaiah 53:1-12

13 Behold, my servant shall act wisely;
    he shall be high and lifted up,
    and shall be exalted.
14 As many were astonished at you—
    his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance,
    and his form beyond that of the children of mankind—
15 so shall he sprinkle many nations;
    kings shall shut their mouths because of him;
for that which has not been told them they see,
    and that which they have not heard they understand.
53 Who has believed what he has heard from us?
    And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For he grew up before him like a young plant,
    and like a root out of dry ground;
he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
    and no beauty that we should desire him.
He was despised and rejected by men;
    a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;
and as one from whom men hide their faces
    he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Surely he has borne our griefs
    and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
    smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions;
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
    and with his wounds we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
    yet he opened not his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
    and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
    so he opened not his mouth.
By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
    and as for his generation, who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
    stricken for the transgression of my people?
And they made his grave with the wicked
    and with a rich man in his death,
although he had done no violence,
    and there was no deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
    he has put him to grief;
when his soul makes an offering for guilt,
    he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
    make many to be accounted righteous,
    and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,
    and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,
because he poured out his soul to death
    and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
    and makes intercession for the transgressors.

Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord

People: Thanks be to God.

Pastor: Let us pray.  Almighty and everlasting God, You willed that Your Son should bear for us the pains of the cross and so remove from us the power of the adversary.  Help us so to remember and give thanks for our Lord’s passion that we may receive forgiveness of sin and redemption from everlasting death; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

All: Amen.

HYMN

425         When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

425 When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

1      When I survey the wondrous cross
    On which the Prince of Glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss
    And pour contempt on all my pride.

2      Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast
    Save in the death of Christ, my God;
All the vain things that charm me most,
    I sacrifice them to His blood.

3      See, from His head, His hands, His feet
    Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet
    Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

4      Were the whole realm of nature mine,
    That were a tribute far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
    Demands my soul, my life, my all!

THE PASSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST

Reading: John 18:1-11

HYMN: Chief of Sinners Though I Be, LSB#611 (St. 1-2)

611 Chief of Sinners Though I Be

1      Chief of sinners though I be,
Jesus shed His blood for me,
Died that I might live on high,
Lives that I might never die.
As the branch is to the vine,
I am His, and He is mine.

2      Oh, the height of Jesus’ love,
Higher than the heav’ns above,
Deeper than the depths of sea,
Lasting as eternity!
Love that found me—wondrous thought!
Found me when I sought Him not.

Reading: John 18:12-27

HYMN: Chief of Sinners Though I Be, LSB#611 (St. 3-5)

3      Only Jesus can impart
Balm to heal the wounded heart,
Peace that flows from sin forgiv’n,
Joy that lifts the soul to heav’n,
Faith and hope to walk with God
In the way that Enoch trod.

5      O my Savior, help afford
By Your Spirit and Your Word!
When my wayward heart would stray,
Keep me in the narrow way;
Grace in time of need supply
While I live and when I die.

Reading: John 18:28-40

HYMN: Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me, LSB#761 (St. 1-2)

761 Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me

1      Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy riven side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure:
Cleanse me from its guilt and pow’r.

2      Not the labors of my hands
Can fulfill Thy Law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Reading: John 19:1-16

HYMN Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me, LSB#761 (St. 3-4)

3      Nothing in my hand I bring;
Simply to Thy cross I cling.
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die.

4      While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyelids close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.

Reading: John 19:16-30

HYMN: The Lamb, LSB#547 (St. 1&3)

547 The Lamb

1      The Lamb, the Lamb,
O Father, where’s the sacrifice?
    Faith sees, believes
God will provide the Lamb of price! Refrain

ref   Worthy is the Lamb whose death makes me His own!
The Lamb is reigning on His throne!

3      The Lamb, the Lamb,
As wayward sheep their shepherd kill
    So still, His will
On our behalf the Law to fill. Refrain

Reading: John 19:31-42

HYMN: The Lamb, LSB#547  (St. 4-5)

4      He sighs, He dies,
He takes my sin and wretchedness.
    He lives, forgives,
He gives me His own righteousness. Refrain

ref   Worthy is the Lamb whose death makes me His own!
The Lamb is reigning on His throne!

5      He rose, He rose,
My heart with thanks now overflows.
    His song prolong
Till ev’ry heart to Him belong. Refrain

HYMN – Were You There (LSB#456, St. 1)

          Were You There                                               LSB   456

1     Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
    Oh . . .Sometimes it causes me to tremble,
            tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Pastor: Thus says the Lord: What have I done, O my people, and wherein have I offended You?  Answer me.  For I have raised you up out of the prison house of sin and death, and you have delivered up your Redeemer to be scourged.  For I have redeemed you from the house of bondage, and you have nailed your Savior to the cross.  O my people.  (Micah 6:3-4)

People: Holy Lord, holy and mighty God, holy and most merciful Redeemer; God eternal, leave us not to bitter death.  O Lord, have mercy.

HYMN — Were You There (LSB#456, St. 2)

2     Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?
Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?
    Oh . . .Sometimes it causes me to tremble,
            tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?

Pastor: Thus says the Lord: What have I done, O my people, and wherein have I offended You?  Answer me.  For I have conquered all your foes, and you have given Me over and delivered Me to those who persecute Me.  For I have fed you with My Word and refreshed you with living water, and you have given Me gall and vinegar to drink.  O my people. (Jeremiah 2:6-7)

People: Holy Lord, holy and mighty God, holy and most merciful Redeemer; God eternal, allow us not to lose hope in the face of death and hell.  O Lord, have mercy.

HYMN – Were You There (LSB#456, St. 3)

3     Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?
Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?    Oh . . .Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?

Pastor: Thus, says the Lord: What have I done, O my people, and wherein have I offended You?  Answer me.  What more could have been done for My vineyard than I have done for it?  When I looked for good grapes, why did it yield only bad?  My people, is this how you thank your God?  O my people.  (Isaiah 5:2-4)

People: Holy Lord, holy and mighty God, holy and most merciful Redeemer; God eternal, keep us steadfast in the true faith.  O Lord, have mercy.

HYMN – Were You There (LSB#456, St. 4)

4     Were you there when God raised Him from the tomb?
Were you there when God raised Him from the tomb?    Oh . . .Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when God raised Him from the tomb?

Pastor: Lord, have mercy.

People: Lord, have mercy.

Pastor: Christ, have mercy.

People: Christ, have mercy.

Pastor: Lord, have mercy.

People: Lord, have mercy.

Lord’s Prayer

C    Our Father who art in heaven,

     hallowed be Thy name,

     Thy kingdom come,

     Thy will be done on earth

          as it is in heaven;

     give us this day our daily bread;

     and forgive us our trespasses

          as we forgive those

          who trespass against us;

     and lead us not into temptation,

     but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom

     and the power and the glory

     forever and ever. Amen.

(Silence) A loud noise occurs to symbolize the earthquake and the closing of the tomb)
