“God’s Word is a Lamp to Our Feet”

(Please Rise)

Pastor: The Spirit and the Church cry out

People: Come, Lord Jesus. (Rev. 22:17, 20)

Pastor: All those who await His appearance pray:

People: Come, Lord Jesus. (2 Timothy 4:8)

Pastor: The whole creation pleads:

People: Come, Lord Jesus. (Romans 8:22)

Pastor: Blessed are You…

People: Amen.

Pastor: Let us pray. (Silence for individual prayer)

People: Let the incense of our repentant prayer ascend before You, O Lord, and let Your loving-kindness descend on us that we may, with purified minds, sing Your praises with the Church on earth and the whole heavenly host and may glorify You forever.  Amen.  (Psalm 141)

PSALM

Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path.
106 I have sworn an oath and confirmed it,
    to keep your righteous rules.
107 I am severely afflicted;
give me life, O Lord, according to your word!
108 Accept my freewill offerings of praise, O Lord,
    and teach me your rules.
109 I hold my life in my hand continually,
but I do not forget your law.
110 The wicked have laid a snare for me,
but I do not stray from your precepts.
111 Your testimonies are my heritage forever,
for they are the joy of my heart.
112 I incline my heart to perform your statutes
    forever, to the end.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever.  Amen.

:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path.

HYMN ~ The Advent of Our God, LW#12

READING

2 Corinthians 4: Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Pastor: O Lord, have mercy on us.

All: Thank be to God.

RESPONSORY (Jeremiah 23:5-6)

Pastor: Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch.

People: This is the name by which He will be called: The Lord Is Our Righteousness.

Pastor: He shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.

People: This is the name by which He will be called: The Lord Is Our Righteousness.

Pastor: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

People: This is the name by which He will be called: The Lord Is Our Righteousness.

CATECHISM

The Third Article:

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

What does this mean?
I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith.

In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.

In this Christian church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers.

On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ.

This is most certainly true.
