Mount Calvary Lutheran Church

January 17, 2021 The Second Sunday of Epiphany

**INVOCATION   (Matthew 28:19)

                           **CONFESSION/ABSOLUTION (1 John 1:8-9)

  Pastor:            If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

  People:          But, if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(silence for reflection and self examination)

 Pastor: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

  People:          Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.  We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  We justly deserve your present and eternal punishment.  For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.  Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways to the glory of your most Holy Name.  Amen.

Pastor:             Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake….

**KYRIE ELEISON

Pastor: …in peace let us pray to the Lord:

People: Lord, have mercy.

** GLORIA IN EXCELSIS  (to be sung)

 Pastor:              Glory be to God on high

 People:           and on earth peace, good will toward men.  We praise you, we bless you, we

worship you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory.  O

Lord God, heav’nly King, God the Father Almighty.  O Lord, the only

begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,

who takes away the sin of the world, have mercy; who takes away the sin of

the world, receive our prayer, who sits at the right hand of God the Father,

have mercy.  For you only are holy; you only are the Lord; you only, O

Christ, with the Holy Spirit, are most high in the glory of God the Father.

Amen.

**PRAYER FOR TODAY

Almighty and everlasting God, who governs all things in heaven and on earth, mercifully hear the prayers of Your people and grant us Your peace through all our days; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

HYMN ~  LSB#395 O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright sts. 2, 5-6

2 “Come, heavenly Bridegroom, Light divine,
and deep within our hearts now shine;
There light a flame undying!
In Your one body let us be
As living branches of a tree,
Your life our lives supplying.
Now, though daily
Earth’s deep sadness
May perplex us
And distress us,
Yet with heavenly joy You bless us.

5 “O let the harps break forth in sound!
Our joy be all with music crowned,
Our voices gladly blending!
For Christ goes with us all the way—
Today, tomorrow, every day!
His love is never ending!
Sing out!  Ring out!
Jubilation!
Exultation!
Tell the story!
Great is He, the King of Glory!

6 “What joy to know, when life is past,
The Lord we love is first and last,
The end and the beginning!
He will one day, oh, glorious grace,
Transport us to that happy place
Beyond all tears and sinning!
Amen!  Amen!
Come, Lord Jesus!
Crown of gladness!
We are yearning
For the day of Your returning!”

EPISTLE READING                              Romans 12:6-16

Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia.

**THE GOSPEL                                         John 2:1-11

 **WHAT WE BELIEVE           The Apostles Creed

       I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy

Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

     I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of  saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

SERMON HYMN ~ TFBF#72, “Down at the Cross”

1 Down at the cross where my Savior died,
Down where for cleansing from sin I cried,
There to my heart was the blood applied;
Singin’, Glory to his name!

Glory to his name, Precious name.
Glory to his name, Precious name
There to my heart was the blood applied;
singin’, Glory to his name, his name.

2 I am so wondrously saved from sin,
Jesus so sweetly abides within;
There at the cross where he took me in;
singin’, Glory to his name, his name!

3 Oh, precious fountain that saves from sin,
I am so glad I have entered in;
There Jesus saves me and keeps me clean;
singin’, Glory to his name, his name!

4 Come to this fountain so rich and sweet,
Cast thy poor soul at the Savior’s feet;
Plunge in today, and be made complete;
singin’, Glory to his name, his name!

DISTRIBUTION ~ LSB#644 The Church’s One Foundation           sts. 1–5

1 The Church’s one foundation
    Is Jesus Christ, her Lord;
She is His new creation
    By water and the Word.
From heav’n He came and sought her
    To be His holy bride;
With His own blood He bought her,
    And for her life He died.

2 Elect from ev’ry nation,
    Yet one o’er all the earth;
Her charter of salvation:
    One Lord, one faith, one birth.
One holy name she blesses,
    Partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses
    With ev’ry grace endued.

3 Though with a scornful wonder
    The world sees her oppressed,
By schisms rent asunder,
    By heresies distressed,
Yet saints their watch are keeping;
    Their cry goes up, “How long?”
And soon the night of weeping
    Shall be the morn of song.

4 Through toil and tribulation
    And tumult of her war
She waits the consummation
    Of peace forevermore
Till with the vision glorious
    Her longing eyes are blest,
And the great Church victorious
    Shall be the Church at rest.

5 Yet she on earth has union
    With God, the Three in One,
And mystic sweet communion
    With those whose rest is won.
O blessèd heav’nly chorus!
    Lord, save us by Your grace
That we, like saints before us,
    May see You face to face.

POST-COMMUNION CANTICLE

http://www.clker.com/cliparts/f/T/8/t/a/R/faith-arise-jesus-hi.pngPeople:                  Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word, for my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all people, a light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of Your people Israel.  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.

Pastor:                   O give thanks to the Lord for He is good!

People:                  And His mercy endures forever.
