Mount Calvary Lutheran Church

December 13, 2020 Third Sunday in Advent

**INVOCATION   (Matthew 28:19)

**CONFESSION/ABSOLUTION (1 John 1:8-9)

Pastor:           If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

People:          But, if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(silence for reflection and self examination)

Pastor:            Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

People:          Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.  We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  We justly deserve your present and eternal punishment.  For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.  Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways to the glory of your most Holy Name.  Amen.

Pastor:             God in His mercy has given His Son to die for His sake….

**KYRIE ELEISON

Pastor: …in peace let us pray to the Lord:

People: Lord, have mercy.

**PRAYER FOR TODAY

Lord Jesus Christ, we implore You to hear our prayers and to lighten the darkness of our hearts by Your gracious visitation; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

HYMN ~ LSB#346 When All the World Was Cursed

1 When all the world was cursed
    By Moses’ condemnation,
Saint John the Baptist came
    With words of consolation.
With true forerunner’s zeal
    The greater One he named,
And Him, as yet unknown,
    As Savior he proclaimed.

2 Before he yet was born,
    He leaped in joyful meeting,
Confessing Him as Lord
    Whose mother he was greeting.
By Jordan’s rolling stream,
    A new Elijah bold,
He testified of Him
    Of whom the prophets told:

3 Behold the Lamb of God
    That bears the world’s transgression,
Whose sacrifice removes
    The devil’s dread oppression.
Behold the Lamb of God,
    Who takes away our sin,
Who for our peace and joy
    Will full atonement win.

4 O grant, dear Lord of love,
    That we receive, rejoicing,
The word proclaimed by John,
    Our true repentance voicing,
That gladly we may walk
    Upon our Savior’s way
Until we live with Him
    In His eternal day.

OLD TESTAMENT READING                           Isaiah 40:1-11

1 O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear. Refrain

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!
(LSB#357)

**THE GOSPEL                                           Matthew 11:1-11

**WHAT WE BELIEVE      The Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again

from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of

saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life

            everlasting.  Amen.

SERMON HYMN ~ We Will Understand It Better

1. We are often tossed and driven on the restless sea of time;

somber skies and howling tempests oft succeed a bright sunshine;

in that land of perfect day, when the mists are rolled away,

we will understand it better by and by.

By and by, when the morning comes,

when the saints of God are gathered home,

we’ll tell the story how we’ve overcome,

for we’ll understand it better by and by.

2. We are often destitute of the things that life demands,

want of food and want of shelter, thirsty hills and barren lands;

we are trusting in the Lord, and according to God’s word,

we will understand it better by and by.

(Refrain)

3. Trials dark on every hand, and we cannot understand

all the ways of God would lead us to that blessed promised land;

but he guides us with his eye, and we’ll follow till we die,

for we’ll understand it better by and by.

4. Temptations, hidden snares often take us unawares,

and our hearts are made to bleed for many’a thoughtless word or deed;

and we wonder why the test when we try to do our best,

but we’ll understand it better by and by.

(Refrain)

THE MESSAGE

OFFERTORY

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.  Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.  Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with your free Spirit

SONG~ LSB#547 The Lamb

1 The Lamb, the Lamb,
O Father, where’s the sacrifice?
    Faith sees, believes
God will provide the Lamb of price! Refrain

Ref Worthy is the Lamb whose death makes me His own!
The Lamb is reigning on His throne!

2 The Lamb, the Lamb,
One perfect final offering.
    The Lamb, the Lamb,
Let earth join heav’n His praise to sing. Refrain

3 The Lamb, the Lamb,
As wayward sheep their shepherd kill
    So still, His will
On our behalf the Law to fill. Refrain

4 He sighs, He dies,
He takes my sin and wretchedness.
    He lives, forgives,
He gives me His own righteousness. Refrain

5 He rose, He rose,
My heart with thanks now overflows.
    His song prolong
Till ev’ry heart to Him belong. Refrain
